Mokelumne Hill & Historic downtown
Explore the history of Mokelumne Hill, a peaceful village surrounded by hills and close to the Mokelumne River. Originally home to the Miwok Indians, the name Mokelumne was recorded by Father Narcisco Duran in 1817, likely from the native term meaning "people of Mokel." In the 1850s, Mokelumne Hill became an important mining town during the Calaveras County gold rush, founded by French trappers in the 1830s. It developed into a busy trading center for miners. As you walk through downtown, you’ll see key sites like the first newspaper, early miners' laws, and the origins of the post office and fire department. Experience a community where gas lights and telephones changed daily life. Mokelumne Hill invites you to explore and connect with California's rich past. Today, Mokelumne Hill is the main hub for nearby ranches, homes, mines, and businesses, offering schools, shops, hotels, restaurants, saloons, a post office, and communication services. Over 150 years later, it still serves this role as it did in 1850. Many early homes and historic buildings remain, showcasing 19th-century life in this resilient community. Discover Mokelumne Hill's rich history in the charming downtown area. Start at Moke Hill Nuts and Mok-A-Java for artisanal snacks and coffee. Hotel History
Experience history at Hotel Léger, one of California’s oldest hotels, welcoming guests since 1851. Originally known as Hotel d‘France, it was owned by George Leger until 1879, then cared for by George and Rosina Muths, who turned it into a favored stop for travelers. With its rich past, Hotel Léger offers more than lodging; it provides a glimpse into stories of friendship and hospitality. The restaurant is housed in a stone building that began as a County Court House in 1854. Alexis Yocht and Jean Ducouytres opened the Hotel de France here in 1851, starting in a tent before upgrading to a frame structure. George Leger took charge in 1853, rebuilt with stone after a fire, and connected it to the Court House, creating a unique dining experience steeped in history. Since 1851, Hotel Léger has evolved with the community. The Court House expanded in 1862 due to a deal with Leger, who added a second story in 1863. It later became a saloon and office with the County Seat moving in 1866. After a fire in 1874, Leger rebuilt and expanded his hotel, linking its story to the historic Court House. Enjoy the charm of a place that has offered “room, board, brandy, and more” for over a century. Join us at Hotel Léger, where history meets hospitality.
